Judicial Hardening

Judicial hardening is God's act of confirming a person or group in a rebellious course as an act of judgment, while using that rebellion to accomplish a wider purpose.

Expanded explanation

Scripture can describe both a person's own hardening of their heart and God's hardening of their heart. These descriptions need not be opposites. A person can repeatedly resist God, and God can then give that person over to the chosen course or use that rebellion in a larger act of judgment.

Context

This distinction is important in discussions of Pharaoh, Israel, and Romans 9. Hardening should be read with the surrounding account of rebellion, patience, warning, judgment, and God's purposes rather than used as a stand-alone explanation of every unbeliever.
